Whilst you don’t need to be a holistic enthusiast to enjoy the benefits of aromatherapy, we thought it could be useful to address some of the advantages of incorporating this simple but powerful therapy technique into your life.

Aromatherapy, put simply, is the use of aromatic plant extracts and essential oils for healing and cosmetic purposes.

Essential oils in particular have wonderful benefits; due to the aromas which help to stimulate healthy chemicals in your brain, as well as concentrating on your breathing being extremely therapeutic (ask any yogi!).

A great example of aromatherapy that most of us have tried at one point or another in our lives is inhaling eucalyptus essential oils to ease congestion when that annual winter cold invades.

Aromatherapy can be used to help boost your energy levels too. We’re sure you’ll agree that you could certainly make use of a bit more energy day to day!

The strains of modern life can be draining, along with stimulants such as coffee, cigarettes and alcohol that provide short term perks, but are known to have very damaging effects on the body and can leave you feeling like you’re running on empty.

Many essential oils are known to increase circulation, raise energy levels and generally stimulate the body and mind, without the dangerous side effects of other stimulating substances. The best essential oils for giving yourself an effective energy boost include black pepper, cardamom, cinnamon, clove, angelica, jasmine, tea tree, rosemary and sage.

Perhaps the most well-known benefit of aromatherapy is the ability to help reduce stress levels.

The aromatic compounds from different essential oils are known as relaxants which can help soothe your mind and eliminate anxiety. Some of the best essential oils for stress relief are lemon oil, lavender, bergamot, peppermint, vetiver and ylang-ylang.

Some studies have also shown that lemon oil can be used to improve your mood and help to reduce outbursts of anger. That’s worth trying!
